Elements of Design


SPACE: the area around an object, where nothing lies, or the area an object takes up. Space is the area an object fills or leaves left over.



VALUE: value is the difference between shades of a color. It designates whether a single hue is lighter of darker (has less or more value).

COLOR: color is one of the most striking elements of design. The way different colors match and blend influences the design significantly.


TEXTURE: texture is how an object feels. Whether rough or smooth, matte or shiny, texture describes the surface apperance of design.



SHAPE: shape is the way different lines, angles, and forms mesh together to create a shape that makes an intelligble object.


FORM: form is a combination of lines that creates a generic geometric or abstract figure.


LINE: a line is a series of points that have direction and can be curved or straight. lines are the basic structures of form
